Glacier Skywalk
In the heart of the Canadian Rockies, where glacial ice and ancient rock formations sculpt the landscape, juts the Glacier Skywalk; a cantilevered walkway extending 100 terrifying feet out from a cliff face.
Located in Jasper National Park, the architectural gem designed by Sturgess Architecture includes an interpretive exhibit and has won numerous awards, including the World Architecture Festival, and Architizer A+ Award.
The construction process employed innovative techniques to minimize site disturbance, including the use of helicopters for material transport and the strategic placement of anchor points to avoid sensitive ecological areas.
Standing on the glass bridge feels exhilarating and surreal, like being in an immersive large-scale installation piece, offering majestic vantage points - including from underneath ones feet. The weathered steel can withstand the harsh alpine environment, but also develops a patina over time intended to harmonize with the earthy tones of the surrounding rock faces.
